Who is your financial coach?

I am a Dental Hygienist full time by day and a Ramsey Solutions Trained Master Financial Coach by night!  I am passionate for the dental health of my patients and also have a talent for helping others with their financial well being.  I have studied for many years regarding personal finance during my free time.

I was not sure what I wanted to do as a career when I graduated high school.   I knew that I wanted a job that would allow me to support myself and not be dependent on anyone else.    I also wanted a life that was more stable than how I grew up.  I was determined not to be worried if my bills could be paid each month.  Due to my family’s financial situation I had to pay my own way through school and acquired quite a bit of debt to complete my education.  I wasn’t too worried about paying it back because I knew I would have a good job when I got out of school.

I lived at home and attended a local community college for three years paying cash for my tuition and books.   Once I decided to work in the health care field I transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill for Dental Hygiene.  I came back home for the summers and worked full time to save $3000-4000 for my living expenses.  By the time I graduated with a BS Degree from Carolina I had taken out school loans totaling more than $20,000 and owed over $20,000 on a credit card (these were needs not wants).

I ended up working for the US Public Health Service for 3 years and was blessed to receive money to pay back some of my school loans.  I quickly learned how hard it was to pay school loans and maintain the life style that I thought I needed.  I had always been good with my money, though I never had a written budget.   Like most of America I was under the assumption that making payments was a normal way of life which couldn’t be avoided.  As time went by I thought I was doing fine, after all I could make all my payments, had extra play money and was able to save some for retirement.  Little did I know that I was not maximizing my income its fullest ability.

I’m sure you have heard many times that you will always have a House Payment or you will always have a Car Payment???  Well I am here to tell you that it does not have to be that way!!! Like many before me I am living proof of that fact!!!  My husband Tracy and I took Financial Peace University in March of 2011 (13 week class) and boy let me tell you it changed our lives and our path to the future!!  We started out with over $45,000 in debt consisting of Credit Cards, 2 Car Payments, House Payment, Camper Payment and School Loans.  We paid that off by Feb 28th 2012!!!  That is less than a year!!! 🙂  We were able to get married debt free (other than my house)!!!  We sold my house and purchased a house together that we are currently working towards paying that off early (hopefully 5 years or less)!!!

I am very passionate about this subject and want to change Western North Carolina’s opinion on money and debt!!! My goal is to move all those mountains of debt out of WNC!!! Will you be part of the solution and help me change this part of our state!!! The amount of stress that will be released from your shoulders when you are finally Debt Free will be amazing!!!
